Wanted Maoist Area Commander Arrested in Gumla- The New Indian Express

RANCHI: The Maoist area commander Johan Topno, a member of the splinter group of the People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), was arrested in Gumla. According to the police, Topno was quite active in the Khunti, Gumla, Simdega and West Singhbhum districts of Jharkhand and had managed to escape several encounters with the police.

The police said that Topno, on the instructions of the head of the PLFI, Dinesh Gope, had gone to reactivate his organization in the areas of Kamdara, Basia, Kurkura, Rania, Khunti and Torpa in Gumla during which a raid was carried out and was arrested. However, two of his assistants managed to escape from the scene, ”said Gumla SP Ehtesham.

In an indication that Topno and his team have been seen in the village of Turdu below the Kamdara police station, a police team was formed and the place was raided, he added.

The SP said that when the police team arrived there, three suspects were seen in Dahu Toli Chowk, who declared they were fleeing. Police pursued them and arrested one of the three people who revealed his name as Johan Topno during questioning, he said.

“A loaded national-made pistol and some cartridges have also been recovered from him. Meanwhile, a hunt is started to arrest the two people who escaped from the place, ”said the SP. Topno had also been arrested in early 2018, but was released on bail after a few occasions, he said.

According to SP, Topno had been a terror in the four districts of Khunti, Gumla, Simdega and West Singhbhum and was wanted in at least 14 cases related to looting, extortion, act of arms, tax collection and murder.
