Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry reacts strongly to India’s threats to carry out military action on Pakistani soil if provoked as “very irresponsible”.
Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has reacted strongly to statements by the Indian Defense Minister over the weekend, calling threats to carry out military action on Pakistani soil if provoked as “highly irresponsible. , provocative and gratuitous, “reads a statement.
On Saturday, India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh promised that his country would carry out operations across the international border into Pakistani territory if India’s western neighbor “creates too much trouble.”
“Now we have given them the message that if … they create a lot of problems, then not only at the border, we can cross the border and carry out a surgical strike as well, and if necessary, carry out air strikes as well.” Singh said, addressing a ceremony in the northern Indian city of Pithoragarh.
In a statement issued late on Sunday, the Foreign Ministry rejected Singh’s remarks and accused the Indian government of “misleading[ing] in falsehoods and fantasies pointing fingers at neighbors ”.
“His unfounded comments are misleading on the one hand, and reflect India’s characteristic hostility towards its neighbors on the other,” the Pakistani statement said.
Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have fought three large-scale wars since gaining independence from the British in 1947.
Relations have been virtually frozen since a 2019 military clash in the disputed territory of Kashmir that saw an air skirmish and both countries bombed each other’s territory.
The 2019 showdown was defused after Pakistan shot down an Indian fighter jet over Pakistani airspace and returned the pilot after two days of high tension.
The two countries accuse each other of sponsoring or facilitating armed groups operating on each other’s soil.
Such accusations have increased in frequency and tenor since 2014, when the right-wing Bharatiya Janata (BJP) party of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected to power.
“Pakistan is fully capable of defending itself against any aggression. The whole world witnessed Pakistan’s ability and resolve to thwart India’s disgrace in February 2019, ”Pakistan’s statement said on Sunday.
