DHANBAD: One person was killed and two others injured when they were shot by criminals in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, a senior police officer said on Friday.
Three friends, Neeraj Tiwari, Ronak Gupta and Rahul Gupta, were sitting at a tea stand near Rajasthani Dharmashala on the Katras-Rajganj road, about 40 km from here, on Thursday night.
The bicycle criminals arrived and opened indiscriminate fire on Tiwari, which also hit Ronak Gupta and Rahul Gupta, police said.
Baghmara SDPO Nisha Murmu and the officer in charge of the Katras police station, Rasbihari Lal, who arrived at the scene immediately, said the incident occurred around 9pm on Thursday.
The police rushed Neeraj Tiwari and Ronak Gupta to Dhanbad hospital, while Rahul Gupta, who was shot in the hand, was admitted to the local Nichitpur hospital.
A police officer said that doctors at the Aserfi Hospital in Dhanbad stated that Neeraj Tiwari had died while Ronak Gupta was in treatment.
Dhanbad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjiv Kumar told reporters that the late Neeraj Tiwari and his friend Ronak Gupta had criminal records.
“The police are investigating the incident from different angles. CCTV images are being scanned. The criminals would be arrested soon,” he said.
The injured, Ronak Gupta and Rohit Gupta, are being treated at different hospitals.
Sources said that Neeraj Tiwari was involved in criminal activities, but had recently become a police informant.
They said Tiwari was on the target list of a notorious criminal gang for having gang members arrested in Katras in connection with the extortion lawsuit from coal traders and businessmen.
When asked if Tiwari was a police informant, the SSP denied it.
