Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren announces Rs 50 lakh each for all members of the women’s hockey team

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced Rs 50 lakh each for all members of the Indian women’s hockey team participating in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Friday evening, ANI news agency reported. Their ancestral homes will be rebuilt into ‘Pakka houses’, he added.

In addition, the Haryana government will honor the nine players of the state’s Indian women’s hockey team with a cash reward of Rs 50 lakh each, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said.

In addition, the governments of Mizoram and Manipur have also declared cash prizes and other incentives for Lalremsiami (Mizoram) and Sushila Chanu (Manipur), both members of the women’s hockey team.

Mizoram’s chief minister Zoramthanga said the state hockey star Lalremsiami will be offered a government job and land in his hometown. “The Mizoram government sanctioned Rs 20 lakhs for her preparation, will reward her with another Rs 25 lakhs cash incentive for her participation in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” the Chief Minister said in a tweet.

In Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh spoke to 29-year-old Sushila Chanu by phone and congratulated her and the women’s hockey team. He tweeted: “I congratulated the team on their stellar performance and shared the news about the appropriate tribute Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji paid to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand by naming the Khel Ratna award in his honor.”

An official from the Sports Department said that the Chief Minister during his conversation with Sushila Chanu claimed to develop logistics facilities and artificial turf for the benefit of Manipur’s hockey players.

Earlier in the day, the historic Indian women’s hockey team’s dream of securing their first Olympic medal was unfulfilled as they lost 3-4 to Great Britain in a close bronze tiebreaker, but the brave team managed to record their best ever result in today’s Games. The team had already made history and exceeded all expectations by entering the semifinals of the Games for the first time. But the inaugural Olympic medal remained out of bounds as world No. 4 Great Britain, who won gold at the 2016 Rio Games, prevailed in the throbbing encounter.
