JAMSHEDPUR: A villager was trampled to death by a herd of more than 12 elephants in the forest area of Kharsawan, about 20 km from Jamshedpur, late Monday night. The man has been identified as Balram korai. I was 30 years old.
According to an eyewitness, Sunil bodra, also in his 30s, were returning home on their bicycles when they were attacked by the herd of elephants. Sunil He said he somehow pedaled faster and escaped falling under the elephants’ legs. But Balram could not escape and was crushed by elephants. Upon reaching his village Pranganthidi, he narrated the whole story to the residents. Hearing this, the villagers rushed to the scene and retrieved Balram’s body.
The duo had gone to Vishaygora village in Kharswan and were returning home when attacked. The road connecting the two places runs through a wooded area and often the elephants of Dalma Range had attacked locals in the past.
A police team together with forestry officials arrived at the scene and sent the body for an autopsy. The district administration gave 50,000 rupees free of charge to the victim’s relatives. Officials assured that an additional 3.5 thousand rupees would be given to the family once all the formalities have been completed.
