BENGALURU: Isro is on an interstellar overdrive, working on a bunch of future technologies that could be part of Hollywood sci-fi. Think self-eating rockets and self-disappearing satellites, to name just a few of the 46 sectors of mind-blowing technology taking shape at your innovation hub.
“All of our rockets have metal covers that are thrown into the sea after launch or become space debris (final stage). We are working on a technology through which the rockets will effectively eat themselves, eliminating the spill of debris in the seas and space debris. We are looking for special casing materials that can burn together with the engines, “Isro President K Sivan told TOI on Tuesday.
In the same vein, self-disappearing satellite technology would allow the destruction of the spacecraft, once its useful life ends, through a “shutdown button” to start a process that will burn it up in orbit.
“When rockets fly, sometimes there are flaws. Self-healing materials can correct some of these flaws on their own,” Sivan said.
The concepts of creation in space, quantum communication and advanced radars are the other technologies Isro is focusing on as part of the plan to prepare India for the future, even as private companies manage daily launches.
