Four children drown in Giridih district during ‘Chhath Puja’ festivities

Giridih: Four children drowned in the Giridih district of Jharkhand on Tuesday during the ‘Chhath Puja’ festivities, a police officer said.

The incident took place in the village of Mangrodih, below the Mufassil police station in the district, when children and women had gone to a nearby river to bathe and bring water to make ‘prasad’ of Chhath Puja, a festival important in the region, the official said. said.

All the children were under the age of 10, police said. The deceased have been identified as Munna Singh, son of Mahesh Singh, Suhana Kumari, daughter of Madan Singh, Sonakshi Kumari, daughter of Tinku Singh and Diksha Kumari, daughter of Ajay Sharma.

Diksha Kumari, a native of Bokaro, had come to Mangrodih to celebrate Chhath there at her grandmother’s house. All four were rushed to Giridih Sadar Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead, police said. Several political parties have expressed sadness over the incident. Earlier, seven girls had drowned in the Latehar district during the Karma festival in September.
