The Election Commission of India (ECI) withdrew the appointment of actor Sonu Sood as Punjab’s state icon, a senior official said on Friday. The survey panel had appointed him to the position in November 2020.
Punjab Electoral Director (CEO) S Karuna Raju told The Indian Express that the decision was made after taking note of some media reports about the actor’s recent meetings with political figures.
“To be the state icon of the ECI, we need a non-political person and without any affiliation or association with any political party, its activities or politicians. So we recommend its removal as a state icon, which has been approved by the ECI. I spoke with Sood and contacted him. We also thanked him for the wonderful trip we had, “Raju said, adding that a written communication was also sent to the actor in this regard.
Raju said the appointment was withdrawn on January 4.
In recent days, Sood has visited Punjab several times and met with political personalities, including Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Shiromani President Akali Dal Sukhbir Singh Badal.
He had also held a press conference a few weeks ago to announce that his sister Malvika Sood Sachar would be participating in the Moga polls. Recently, she was camping in the constituency and touring villages with her sister for her campaign.
Speaking to The Indian Express, the actor said that he had already planned to give up the title as his sister would be contesting the polls. “It was a great partnership with ECI. However, I was no longer fit for the title as my sister would be contesting the Moga polls. I was planning to give up the title myself in the next few days, “said Sood.
Sood’s sister has yet to receive a call about whether she will join a party or participate in polls as an independent. “We will most likely respond next week,” Sood said.
There has also been widespread speculation that the actor himself will contest the elections, a claim that he constantly denies.
