Police detained 243 suspects and arrested 17 people in connection with the death of Judge Uttam Anand in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district, in addition to seizing 250 auto-rickshaws, a senior official said Monday.

Two police officers were also suspended, including one for making CCTV footage of the incident public, he said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjiv Kumar said 243 people were detained after raids in different areas of the district police station on Sunday night.

They are being questioned, he added.

“The police also searched 53 hotels in the district and arrested 17 people in connection with the incident. FIRs have been filed against him at different police stations, ”said Kumar.

Although police recovered the autorickshaw that struck the judge when he was out for a morning walk, 250 autorickshaws with irregular documents were seized on a special tour, the officer said.

Deputy Inspector Adarsh Kumar was suspended for making the CCTV footage public, Kumar said.

Pathardih Police Station Chief Umesh Manjhi was suspended on Saturday for presenting to the FIR about an autorickshaw theft two days after the accident, he said.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren had decided on Saturday to hand over the investigation to the CBI.

Leaked CCTV footage showed the judge was jogging on the side of a fairly wide road in Randhir Verma Chowk on Wednesday morning when an automatic rickshaw swerved toward him, struck him from behind and fled the scene.
